CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Betty Hasse (U23) and Taylor Knibb (Elite) claimed the title of national champion Wednesday during the USA Cycling Pro Road Time Trial Event on the Kanawha Boulevard.
For Hasse, the win came as no surprise as she finished two minutes ahead of the second place cyclist. The 21-year-old won the U23 time trial event which pits the best 18- to 23-year old’s in the country against each other.
“It’s great, I would recommend that experience, I really like bike racing, I really wanna see how far I can take it, and really see what I can make happen over the next couple of years,” Hasse said.
Taylor Knibb crossed the finish line of the Elite time trial with a sub 42 minute time– and this came just days after she earned a silver medal in a triathlon event in Japan. The winner of the Elite time trial event earned an automatic qualifier for the 2024 Paris Olympic games.
Knibb was already qualified to compete in the triathlon at the Paris Olympics, but now she gets another chance to show out on the global stage in the time trial event.
“Your career is short, it is a sporting career. I am not under any false illusions that I am going to be able to do this forever … I am just very grateful, and you never take an opportunity for granted,” Knibb said.
Knibb also said this was only her second time trial event ever, and that she appreciated all the hospitality the city of Charleston showed her.
“Everyone in Charleston has been nothing but very kind and welcoming community, and so I hope to come back some day,” Knibb said.
