Looking like an Olympic force to be reckoned with, the United States women’s national team swatted aside Germany, 4-1, Sunday in Marseille. The Americans’ forward trio of Sophia Smith (two goals today), Mallory Swanson (one goal today, three thus far in the tournament) and Trinity Rodman repeatedly showed its quality, and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made key saves in both the first and second halves. The other U.S. goal was scored by Lynn Williams, a popular veteran, making for a feel-good showing all around as the side went to the top of its qualifying group with a game to go against Australia on Wednesday before the knockout round begins.
