Minnesota’s History of Inclusion: Mobile Museum Explores Disability
One aspect of Minnesota’s history that has often been overlooked is the story of people with developmental disabilities. However, a new traveling exhibit at Southwest Minnesota State University is aiming to change that. Titled “Inclusion,” the mobile museum explores the journey of Minnesotans with developmental disabilities from 1900 to the present day.
Created in 2022 by the Minnesota Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities, “Inclusion” is part of an effort to educate the public about this important piece of state history. The exhibit features a variety of photos and displays showcasing individuals with developmental disabilities throughout different time periods.
This journey through history also highlights how perceptions and treatment around people with disabilities have evolved over time. In particular, it examines how children with disabilities were once encouraged to be institutionalized, showcasing some images depicting poor living conditions experienced by those in institutions as well as the obstacles they faced for equality and independence.
Notably, Minnesota is among 16 U.S. states that have shut down large state institutions for people with developmental disabilities – an event that occurred only two decades ago when the final resident left the system in 2000.
Can you provide some inspiring case studies of individuals overcoming adversity due to disabilities in Minnesota?
