Empowering the Disabled: A Night Race Celebration
Recently, the Khosa Running Club joined forces with the Krugersdorp Lions Club to organize a thrilling Night Race aimed at empowering individuals with disabilities. This spirited event‍ attracted over 60 participants, including members from various‌ local running groups such as Krugersdorp Road Runners, Khosa, and Lions Club, alongside students⁢ from the West Rand School for the Disabled.
A Growing Tradition
This year marked the fifth installment of this cherished community event. Participants covered a distance of 2 kilometers where young individuals with disabilities were either pushed in wheelchairs or received assistance from enthusiastic members of local running clubs who accompanied them on foot.
The Heart Behind the Event
Anne Corden, secretary of the Krugersdorp Lions Club, emphasized that this annual race embodies their commitment to uplifting vulnerable members within their community. “The event celebrates children with different forms of mental and physical challenges; our goal is to provide them with joy through physical activity—an experience not often accessible to them,” she stated.
A Token of Achievement
Upon completion of their run, every participant was awarded a medal in recognition of their effort and enthusiasm. This race⁢ is just one segment of numerous initiatives organized by the Lions throughout Kliptown each year that aim to foster inclusivity and support.
Your Safety First
To maintain safety during this fun-filled night, marshals were strategically placed along each section of the route as well as at critical junctions. Additionally, every participant requiring assistance was paired up with both a caregiver and a member from one of the running clubs or local organizations for added support.
