London’s Most Hazardous Cycling Intersections: A 2024 Update
If you cycle through London, it’s crucial to be‍ aware of some exceptionally hazardous intersections. For the second consecutive year, the London Cycling Campaign (LCC) has identified the capital’s most perilous junctions for cyclists, revealing that few changes have occurred since last year.
Analyzing collision records spanning six years, LCC pinpointed locations in the city where riders face the highest risks. As of early 2024, London has already recorded six fatalities involving cyclists, with a significant number occurring at junctions notorious for danger.
Top Dangerous Junctions for Cyclists
The ‘Upper Tooting Road cluster’—where Ansell Road, Derinton Road, Price Close, Lessingham Avenue intersect with Upper Tooting Road and Cycle Superhighway CS7—has been highlighted as‌ the most treacherous spot for cyclists. The LCC criticized Wandsworth Council for their inaction regarding ‘rat runs,’ which enable cars to use side streets as speedy shortcuts. Over a six-year span at this cluster alone, there have been 11 serious injuries and another 20 minor accidents involving cyclists.
Runner-Up: The Shoreditch Triangle
A close second in danger is the ‘Shoreditch Triangle,’ located where Great Eastern Street meets Curtain Road—a site that has seen nine severe injuries within this period.
Third Place: Clapham High Street/Lendal Terrace
Taking third place is Clapham High Street/Lendal Terrace; statistics reveal it experienced six serious injuries alongside 23 less severe incidents over these years.
