Breaking Barriers: Deirdre Burke’s Leadership at Ballinrobe RFC
A Pioneering President
In a significant milestone for sports in the region, Deirdre Burke has been appointed as the inaugural female president of Ballinrobe Rugby Football Club. Her election aligns with the remarkable resurrection of the club’s women’s team after a 25-year hiatus.
“The ladies faced Galwegians for their first match and emerged victorious. It was an extraordinary occasion,” Burke recounted to The Mayo News. “Despite their initial nerves, they quickly found their footing and showcased commendable skills on the pitch. Our coach was thrilled.” This event marks not just a game, but represents long-standing aspirations realized for Ballinrobe.
A Commitment to Women’s Rugby Development
Burke is determined to elevate women’s rugby throughout her two-year presidency alongside dedicated coaches and committee members. “Creating opportunities for women athletes to engage with rugby is vital for our club,” she emphasizes. “They certainly deserve stronger support.”
The surge in female participation since 2020 is promising, yet challenges remain—particularly regarding adult teams⁣ and continuity among youth aged nine to fourteen. Future plans include introducing an Under-12 girls’ section to enrich the youth academy pipeline, followed by establishing a U-20 women’s team tailored for seamless transition into adult competitions.
Navigating Local Sports Dynamics
“Attracting more participants can be challenging given that Ballinrobe offers a variety of sports options,” admits Burke. “However, rugby benefits from our expansive catchment area; we draw players from surrounding areas such as Neale and Partry.” Unlike GAA clubs which are often restricted by parish lines, this flexibility enhances player recruitment potential in rugby.
The Evolution of Women’s Rugby Perception
The shift in how women’s rugby is viewed has grown more positive over recent years ⁢thanks largely to initiatives introduced by Connacht Rugby—a female development officer was appointed specifically focused on enhancing engagement within clubs like Ballinrobe RFC through school events.
A Shift in Roles Within The Club
Before embracing her presidential role, Burke served as club secretary where she dedicated eleven years managing various operational tasks before seeking fresh opportunities within leadership dynamics.
