Reform Needed for Malaysian Athletics: A Call for Change
Current State of Affairs within Malaysia Athletics
Datuk Fadzil A. Bakar, the deputy president of Malaysia Athletics (MA), recently expressed grave concerns about the state of the national athletics body, recommending immediate reforms to restore its credibility. He accused the current president, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, of neglecting serious allegations involving a member’s mismanagement of funds by failing to discuss the issue with the disciplinary board.
Opposition to Term Extensions for Office-Bearers
Fadzil has also voiced his disapproval over proposals suggesting a one-year extension for incumbent office-bearers. This suggestion arises from modifications in their governance framework that propose increasing term limits from three to four years while also allowing for two consecutive terms. These amendments are a result of recent changes following rebranding efforts where the federation was renamed Malaysia Athletics on January 15.
In relaying his thoughts during an interview with Twentytwo13, Fadzil mentioned that any constitutional amendments should be enacted post-Annual General Meeting (AGM), scheduled by June 30. “While extending tenure may not inherently pose issues,” he stated, “we must adhere strictly to regulations set forth during our election under previous statutes.” He confirmed that a majority within the council share similar sentiments regarding this proposal’s validity.
Inquiry into Fund Misappropriation Allegations
On another note regarding financial transparency, Fadzil disclosed that a special committee was constituted on July 29, 2024, tasked with investigating expenditures related to Malam Anugerah Olahraga Malaysia 2024 (Awards Night). The investigation centers on a questionable reimbursement request amounting to RM18,610 from one member who requested payment despite venue costs being covered entirely by sponsorship deals for an event at a major Kuala Lumpur hotel.
This review highlighted non-adherence to “laws and regulations encapsulated in Rule 18, clause 11,” which mandates prior clearance from finance committees regarding all monetary transactions. The committee recommended forwarding these findings and recommendations concerning council members’ accountability before disciplinary authorities; however, these were reportedly overlooked by President Kassim.
Dissatisfaction With Leadership Changes
Although he holds multiple roles within organization structures—being appointed as part of MA’s finance committee following discussions on July 2—Fadzil noted discrepancies in leadership when Sallerudin Satar emerged as chairman without notification or proper protocol signaling his dismissal from said position after he raised questions over handling finances associated with Malam Anugerah Olahraga Malaysia.
Exasperated yet determined amidst ongoing challenges within MA leadership dynamics—a sentiment echoed by fellow council members urging him against resignation—Fadzil remains committed to advocating integrity and transparency across operations until elections can proceed aimed at revitalizing and cleaning house within the association’s ranks.
Future Steps and Engagements
It is reported that President Shahidan held discussions this evening with Sports Commissioner Suhardi Alias; however specifics around this meeting’s agenda concerning upcoming AGM matters remain unspecified. All eyes will now be trained on how administrative challenges unfold leading up towards potential resolutions aimed at rejuvenating Malaysian athletics governance.
