UCLA Golf Team Steps Up at the Fighting Irish Classic
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The UCLA men’s golf squad recorded a score of 4-over 564 following the first two rounds of competition at the Fighting Irish Classic held at Warren Golf Course. They are currently sharing third place with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock among a field of 15 teams.
Individual Standouts: Morales and Ereño Lead the Charge
Seniors Omar Morales and Pablo Ereño have showcased impressive performances, each positioning themselves among the top five on the individual leaderboard ahead of Monday's third round. Morales achieved an impressive score of 2-under 138 after his opening two rounds, while Ereño concluded with a solid 1-under 139 on Sunday.
Team Rankings After Two Rounds
As for current standings, Notre Dame has taken the lead with a total of 2-over 562 strokes, closely followed by Louisville in second place at 3-over 563. Both UCLA and Arkansas Little Rock share third place with scores reflecting their combined efforts (4-over 564). Purdue is trailing just behind in fifth place (5-over 565), while Iowa sits sixth after totaling an aggregate score of eighth-place (8-over 568).
Contributions from Bruins' Players
Contributions from other Bruins included junior Kyle An, who finished at +3 (143) and sophomore Luke Powell ending his day at +4 (144). Freshman Trevor Garus rounded out UCLA’s roster by recording an aggregate score of +8 (148). A highlight for Garus came during his first round when he accomplished a remarkable hole-in-one on the par-three fourth hole. Meanwhile, An also made headlines by scoring an eagle on hole-16 during his initial round.
Impressive Birdie Counts
Morales and Ereño together managed to secure an impressive total of fifteen birdies throughout both rounds. In detail, Morales started strong with four birdies without any bogeys in his first round but faced challenges later that included two additional birdies paired with one bogey and one triple bogey subsequently. On his part, Ereño recorded four birdies along with three bogeys and one double bogey to conclude his opening round (+1;71) before finishing strongly in Round Two with five birdies set against three bogeys for a stellar finish (-2;68). Freshman Baylor Larrabee participated as an individual competitor as well and shot +7 (147) over these opening segments.
Upcoming Schedule
UCLA will return to compete in Round Three of this prestigious event tomorrow morning on October 7th. Play is slated to commence from both first and tenth holes starting early at around 5 AM PT (8 AM ET) seeing all teams back in action.
